Privacy Policy

Last updated: July 2, 2026 · Terms of Service

Maren is a personal-memory companion. You talk to it, and it remembers your life: facts, journal entries, photos, voice memos, notes, reminders, lists. So it's useful over time. Your memory is the product, and it's built to stay yours: you can export all of it, and delete any of it, at any time.

The short version

1. Who we are

Maren is operated by Maren Technologies, LLC, a Missouri limited liability company ("Maren," "we," "us"). For any privacy question or request, email privacy@marenhq.com.

2. What we collect

Almost everything Maren holds is what you give it: your memory. It's kept as one structured, human-readable record. The categories are:

Photo location: if a photo carries GPS coordinates in its metadata, Maren keeps and shows that location by default, gives you a one-time heads-up the first time, and lets you strip it or set a standing "never keep photo locations" preference.

Some of what you choose to record may be sensitive (health notes, relationships, beliefs, precise photo locations). You decide what goes in, and you can see, edit, and delete any of it.

3. Where your data lives

With a Maren account (the default on the apps): your memory is stored on Maren's hosted backend so it's available across your devices. The server runs on Fly.io; your memory record is held in a managed Neon Postgres database and is encrypted at rest; photos and audio are encrypted and stored on the server's disk (see §9). You sign in with a one-time link emailed to you, so there is no password to steal.

Running Maren yourself: Maren can also run entirely on your own machine with no account, in which case your memory is a single file on your device and nothing about it leaves except what's needed to talk to the AI model (§5). You can move between modes with a manual export/import.

4. Photos & voice never go to a third-party transcription, OCR, or voice service

A hard design rule in Maren: no cloud speech-to-text, no cloud text-to-speech, no cloud OCR.

Text that OCR reads off a photo is then treated like any other thing you've captured, and may be sent to the AI model to form facts (see §5).

5. What goes to the AI model, and why

Maren's conversational "brain" is an AI model Maren runs on your behalf. To write a chat reply, extract facts, or produce an insight, Maren sends the provider your message(s), recent conversation, and a selected, relevant slice of your memory used as context. This is the one part of Maren that goes online for the brain. Maren pays for this inference on its own account: you never supply an API key.

Which providers, today: both chat replies and fact extraction run on open-weight models hosted on servers in the United States, reached through OpenRouter, which we configure, on every request, to route only to providers that do not collect or train on your content. Anthropic is used as the fallback if that host is unavailable. The model is a swappable part of Maren. We may move to a better or cheaper provider over time, and will keep this section and the list below current.

Our commitment holds whoever runs the model: your memory is never sold, and your private content is not used to train anyone's models. Each provider processes this data only as our service provider, to return a result.

6. Service providers (sub-processors)

The outside services Maren relies on, and why:

For some on-device features, a model file may download once from a model host (e.g. Hugging Face) the first time: model files only, never your content.

7. Exporting your data

You can export everything, anytime, in an open format: a clean JSON file that is your memory, and a complete package that adds every photo and audio memo at original quality. It's not gated behind payment, and our pledge is that export access stays available even if you cancel a paid plan.

8. Deleting your data

Maren separates reversible deletes from permanent ones, by design. Deletion is never accidental.

9. Encryption, stated precisely

10. No tracking, no ads, no analytics SDKs

Maren contains no third-party advertising, analytics, or tracking SDKs. We don't show ads, we don't profile you for advertising, and we don't sell or share your personal information for cross-context behavioral advertising. There is nothing to "do not sell," because we don't.

11. Adults only (18+)

Maren is offered only to adults aged 18 or older. Before any memory is collected, Maren shows a neutral date-of-birth check; only a pass/fail result is kept on the device, and your birth date itself is never stored or transmitted. Maren is a conversational AI that remembers your real life, and an adults-only posture is the right floor for that.

12. Your controls and rights

In the app you can see and edit what Maren remembers, delete any of it (reversibly, or permanently for media), export everything including original-quality media, strip photo locations, and turn voice off (it's off by default). Maren only reminds or acts in a category after you grant per-category consent ("just once / always / never"), and "never" is honored and never re-asked.

Depending on where you live, you may have rights to access, correct, delete, or port your personal data, and to object to or restrict certain processing. The in-app export and delete tools cover most of these directly; for anything else, email privacy@marenhq.com and we'll respond. We do not sell or share your personal information.

13. Changes to this policy

If we make a material change, we'll update the date at the top and, where appropriate, notify you in the app. We won't silently strip away a privacy protection you relied on.
